Career

Milan Škriniar began his career in the youth structures of FK iar nad Hronom before joining the youth setup of MK ilina at the age of 12. He made his official Slovak Super Liga debut for the first team on March 27, 2012, at the age of 17 years and 49 days, against ViOn Zlaté Moravce. On November 23, 2012, he scored his first goal in the Slovak Super Liga against ViOn in a 4–1 victory.

In order to gain more first-team experience, Kriniar was loaned out to ViOn Zlaté Moravce for half a season in February 2013.

Sampdoria announced the signing of Milan Kriniar on a four-and-a-half year contract on January 29, 2016.

In late April, Milan Škriniar made his debut in a 2–1 home win over Lazio. Kriniar was a key player for Marco Giampaolo’s Blucerchiati the following season, finishing as the league’s youngest defender with at least 35 appearances.

Kriniar signed a five-year contract with fellow Serie A club Inter Milan on July 7, 2017. The club reportedly paid around €20 million for the striker Gianluca Caprari. With the transfer, Kriniar became the most expensive Slovak player of all time. Four days later, he was introduced and given squad number 37, saying, “It’s incredible to think that in 18 months I’ve gone from the Slovakian league to playing for a club like Inter.”

Kriniar made his competitive debut for Inter on 20 August, in the first matchday of the 2017–18 Serie A season against Fiorentina, which Inter won 3–0 at San Siro. Later that day, against Crotone, he scored his first Serie A goal, the opener in the 82nd minute with a right-footed shot in an eventual 2–0 away win to keep Inter’s winning streak alive. On 24 October, he scored his second goal of the season, this time against his former club Sampdoria, as Inter won 3–2.

In the 2018–19 season, Kriniar made his UEFA Champions League debut on 18 September against Tottenham Hotspur in the first group stage match, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2–1 comeback win at San Siro. Kriniar made his 100th appearance for Inter in all competitions on November 2, 2019, in a Serie A match against Bologna that ended in a 2–1 away win.

Kriniar scored his first UEFA Champions League goal in a 3–1 away win against Sheriff Tiraspol on November 3, 2021.

After national team captain Marek Hamk retired from international duty, Kriniar was named captain of the team in June 2022. During the announcement, national team coach tefan Tarkovi emphasized Kriniar’s leadership qualities.

Kriniar played for various Slovak youth teams before making his senior debut for Slovakia in a friendly 3–1 win over Georgia on May 27, 2016. By the end of the year, he had played in a variety of games and established himself as an important member of the squad in the 2018 World Cup qualification, typically playing as a defensive midfielder.

After Ján Durica’s international retirement in November 2017, Kriniar took his place as Martin krtel’s centre-back partner in the national team, even directing Slovak defense in krtel’s absences (for example, in a double-header against the Netherlands and Morocco despite his relatively young age in comparison to experienced side-backs Peter Pekark and Tomá Huboan).
